Schools offering Nursing in South Carolina

South Carolina has a rich history, including the first shots fired during the Civil War, but nursing schools in the state can be a good choice even for those who aren't history buffs. It doesn't matter if prospective nurses love the ocean or the mountains: South Carolina has 187 miles of coastline, and its highest peak is Sassafras Mountain at 3,560 feet, so students can learn at whichever elevation they prefer.

Choosing campus-based or online nursing schools in South Carolina

South Carolina nursing schools, online or on-campus, can provide students the training they need. Traditional, "brick and mortar" schools appeal to many students, but the structure that attracts some students is a roadblock for many others. Traditional schools have set class schedules and require attendance. Some students need this structure to keep ahead of their school work, but not all learners thrive or can even consider that type of education. Many students work more quickly at their own pace or have other responsibilities that keep them from attending formal classes. Students who need the freedom of online schools but the hands-on experience of campus programs can look for hybrid offerings, which combine the benefits of both.

After graduation from South Carolina nursing schools, online or on-campus

South Carolina registered nurses in 2010 had an annual mean wage of $60,040, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses earned $37,770, which was just below the state mean salary for all occupations, $37,920 as of May 2010.

The South Carolina Department of Commerce included registered nurses in its 2009 list of higher-wage jobs with good opportunities, among other positions not requiring a bachelor's degree. The Carolinas are home to a possible employer that is one of the biggest public nonprofit health systems in the country: Carolinas HealthCare System.
