Schools offering Nursing in New Mexico

The health care field is expected to grow from 2008 through 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As the population ages and people live longer, extended medical care should be in demand, with more career growth potential for nurses. New Mexico nursing schools online provide flexible training options for health services professionals.

BLS estimates show an increase in the number of registered nurses in New Mexico as well as their mean annual wages:

  • 2007: $59,570 salary for 11,400 RNs
  • 2009: $63,550 salary for 12,340 RNs
  • 2010: $66,090 salary for 13,780 RNs

The BLS reported that licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses in New Mexico earned a mean annual wage of $45,490 in 2010, above the $40,050 salary for all occupations in the state.

LPN, RN, NP: What's the difference?

Three basic kinds of nurses each have their own training requirements, scope of practice and advancement potentials:

  • LPNs or LVNs usually complete a year-long certification and practice under the supervision of RNs or physicians.
  • RNs typically complete a two-year associate degree or a bachelor's degree in nursing. A BSN is often required for career advancement to leadership or administrative positions.
  • Nurse practitioners or advance practice RNs generally hold a BSN and a master's degree in nursing.

New Mexico nursing schools, online and on-campus

Of the many online nursing schools in New Mexico, some offer traditional campus and clinical experience paired with virtual classes, while others focus on flexible, independent learning. Many programs provide coursework for continuing education and career advancement. For example, New Mexico State University has an RN to BSN option available online that blends web-based learning with an on-campus orientation and a local practicum.

All nurses are required to take and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), also known as the "state boards" before entering the workforce. The BLS estimates that 60 percent of nurses work in a hospital setting. Other common places of employment include skilled nursing facilities--such as nursing homes and rehabilitation centers, private doctors' offices and specialized clinics. Nurses in New Mexico can seek opportunities in a wide variety of health care environments.
