Schools offering Nursing in Florida

Online nursing schools in Florida offer a broad range of programs, some of which combine the convenience of distance learning with traditional classes and clinical experience. Why choose Florida? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it ranks among the states with the highest number of registered nurses: 158,390 RNs earned an annual mean wage of $63,010 in 2010. In addition, the attractions include pleasant weather, sprawling beaches, Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios Florida and NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

Studying with Florida nursing schools, online or on-campus

As examples of the available training choices, South University and Keiser University feature online programs as well as campuses in Florida. Students can anticipate courses in subjects such as chemistry, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and psychology and behavioral sciences. Supervised clinical rotations may be required, in settings such as the following:

  • Hospitals
  • Hospices or palliative care centers
  • Home health agencies
  • Public health departments
  • After graduation from online nursing schools in Florida

In addition to required courses, students may choose to specialize and become credentialed in one of many nursing specialties such as geriatrics, pediatrics or ambulatory care. Credentialing is usually voluntary but it is required by some employers. The American Nursing Credentialing Center and National League for Nursing are two of several organizations that offer credentialing to RNs.

Upon completion of an RN program, graduates are required to successfully complete the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) before they can practice nursing. The Florida Board of Nursing can also provide insight into additional state certification requirements.

The BLS reports that RNs make up the largest number of health care workers in the United States, and job growth is expected nationally from 2008 to 2018. More than 2.6 million people were employed in the field in 2010, 60 percent of them working in a hospital setting. Aspiring nurses can seek a variety of health care careers in the Sunshine State.
