The online Master of Science in Nursing degree is a concentrated program that prepares registered nurses for advancement into leadership roles. With an on-campus or online MSN, nurses prepare for positions in clinical managerial or assist administration roles. Along with added responsibility often comes the higher online Master of Science in Nursing salary. Online programs typically take between 18 months and two years to complete and many offer flexibility. The online Master of Science in Nursing salary is higher on the East Coast and West Coast of the United States.

Wages vary by nursing specialty, professional experience, and the hospital, clinic, or physicians' offices where MSNs are employed in advanced-practice nursing disciplines. Specialties undertaken at the online MSN level include:

    The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports a mean 2012 annual wage of $88,580 for medical and health service managers and administrators. General and medical surgical hospitals were the largest employers for health service managers and administrators, with top-paying states of Washington, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. The top medical and health services mean 2014 salary was in Santa Clara, CA, at $157,510.

    The BLS reported that in 2014, registered nurses received a top nationwide salary of $98,880. Top-paying states were on each coast. California offered the top Master of Science in Nursing average salary of $98,400. Others were:

    •   Hawaii, $88,230
    •   Massachusetts, $85,770
    •   Alaska, $85,740
    •   Oregon, $82,940
