Explore legal nurse consultant salary options
Legal nurse consulting is one of the many new niche specializations to emerge in the nursing field in the past few decades. Legal nurse consultants, or LNCs, work with the government and health care legislation, insurance claims, personal injury, medical malpractice, corporate risk management, and workers' compensation. They may appear in court to present expert medical evidence, or advise insurance firms and other companies on issues of risk and safety.
Education and training for legal nurse consultants
In order to earn a top legal nurse consultant salary, these professionals must be experts in both medicine and the law. Most legal RN consultants have completed training as a registered nurse--two to four years at a nursing school--followed by postgraduate work, such as a master's degree or specialized training program for LNCs, and completion of Legal Nurse Consultant Certification (LNCC) by the American Legal Nurse Consultant Certification Board.
Legal nurse consultant salary and income expectations
A legal nurse consultant salary can range widely depending on training, experience and position. In general, a legal nursing consultant salary is on the high end of the earnings for registered nurses. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that RNs earned a mean annual income of $66,530 in 2009 and a mean hourly wage of $31.99. The median salary was $63,750 and the top-earning 10 percent of RNs earned more than $93,700, or $45.05 per hour. Nurses working for the federal government and for civic organizations earned a mean income of $77,830. The top-paying states for RNs are California, Massachusetts and Hawaii.
